The Altar

Conan’s Altar was born out of a love for being outdoors in the sun and rain, and the process of capturing that through art, notably in cyanotypes and anthotypes.

At Conan's Altar, we love art about our environment, the trees, plants, and complex systems that our world is made up of. We also love using what is in our environment to produce art, and using that well. Conan’s Altar focuses on turning these practices into quality clothing.

The mission of Conan's Altar is to represent connections to the land and community, and loyalty to protecting it. In areas like where we are based in (Yorkshire, Northern England) we have a rich, dynamic and wild but often undiscovered culture, folk history and creative scene.

Here, we hold the belief that at its core, a devotion to freedom and togetherness are the roots of creative practice. We are weaving together the threads of the art of the past and present sustainably, for people like you to wear.

WHY CONAN’S ALTAR?

Why buy from Conan’s Altar? Other brands are cheaper - of course, and we understand the need to buy cheaper. But we’re planning for a future that looks different, more hopeful.

And being honest, we’re not a business aiming for our customer base to be the fast fashion market. We don’t believe it’s good, although we all have to make ends meet - we don’t believe the aim of that industry as a whole is to even satisfy customer needs! It’s to sell as much as possible, as cheap as possible, with no regard for the Earth, longevity or the creative process.

You’re buying wares with a bit of soul in them when you buy from us, clothes that are thoughtfully made. And better yet, you support your local creative - not big business!

We’re always looking at ways to make our processes more efficient so we can be more affordable, rather than compromising on quality, sustainability and fair pay for everyone involved in making our brand what it is. For example, economically using dye, using the sun or high efficiency LED UV lights, using recycled materials, ect.
